Day 1

Upon arrival at OR Tambo International Airport you will be met by an Island-Safari.com representative. Pick up your rental car from O.R. Tambo International Airport this morning for your five hour drive to Hongonyi Game Lodge.

Set deep in the African bush, Hongonyi private game lodge and wildlife reserve is a safe haven to many of the African antelope species as well as four of the big six.

This establishment with its refreshingly different ambience and informal relaxed atmosphere offers the wildlife enthusiast many photo opportunities and wonderful sightings, at affordable rates.

It is close to, the world-renowned Cheetah Breeding Project, and the Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre near Hoedspruit in the central Lowveld region of the Limpopo Province, also near Orpen Gate at Kruger National Park.

Witness Africa’s most glorious sunsets with sundowners on an evening game drive in an open 4 x 4 safari vehicle, and experience the thrill of close encounters with our big game, especially Rhino, Buffalo, Leopard, Cheetah and Spotted Hyena.

Enjoy exhilarating sunrise safaris on foot with experienced guides who are eager to part with their knowledge of the African bush, and show some of the smaller wonders that nature has provided, including the ’little five’ namely;

The Ant Lion, Elephant Shrew, Leopard Tortoise, Redbilled Buffalo Weaver Bird and Rhinoceros Beetle.

Enjoy the abundant bird life, butterflies, dragonflies and colourful arrays of wild flowers that mingle with the fragrances of the African bush.

Night sightings of the elusive Bush Baby, Serval, Civet and Aardvark add to the romance of a full moon in the evening sky, or the millions of stars that surround and comfort us on a dark African night.

With 14 delightfully comfortable en-suite twin bedrooms, and a cosy Honeymoon suite, surrounded by tropical gardens, Hongonyi ensures the ultimate in rest and relaxation.

Rooms are equipped with overhead fans and insect screens to protect you from the African heat, and to ensure a perfect night’s sleep.

A scrumptious breakfast served under thatch, awaits you after the unforgettable adventures on an early morning bush walk.

Spend the rest of the day at leisure around the swimming pool, on the viewing deck, playing chess in the bush lounge or simply relax in a garden hammock under the shade of the famous Amarula tree, from which the amarula cream liqueur is made.

Delicious home cooked meals and traditional South African braai’s are enjoyed under the African sky as the ambience continues to enchant and bewitch you after a wonderful evening / night drive.

Pleasure is found in the warmth of great friendships around a log fire while listening to the real sounds of Africa, the roar of the Lion, and the bark of the Hyena that electrifies the air as they roam around the reserve at night.

Day 5

Drive back to OR Tambo International. Drop off rental vehicle. Flight from OR Tambo International to Inhambane.

Road transfer from Inhambane Airport to Barra Lodge (Direct flights from O.R Tambo - Inhambane on Mon, Wed, Fri & Sun (flying time approx 2 hours))

Barra Lodge is set in one of the most picturesque areas in Mozambique, with spectacular views of pristine beaches and the crystal clear waters of the Indian Ocean.

Situated 485km north of Maputo, access by road is on a tarred road which is suitable for normal vehicles. The road from Maputo to Xai Xai has been upgraded and resurfaced. North from Xai-Xai there is an old section of road, approx. 70km, which is potholed. This section is being patched and will be completed in due course. After the initial 70km section the road is new and upgraded making the drive a lot easier.

Please note that there are numerous towns and villages en-route and the main road often passes directly through these villages. Speed limits are enforced in these places and it is advised to drive with caution. Do not drive at night. The drive from Maputo to Inhambane can take anything between 6 – 8 hours and sufficient time needs to be allowed to avoid night driving.

One may also fly to Inhambane. Direct flights from O R Tambo Airport in Johannesburg operate throughout the week.

From the historical city of Inhambane it is only a 30 minute drive to Barra Lodge and transfers are done by the lodge staff.

Barra has secluded, unspoilt beaches, and is bordered by the Inhambane estuary on one side and the sea on the other. The lodge is nestled amongst groves of coconut trees and the warm Indian Ocean offers safe bathing all year round.  Wide open, sun-drenched beaches offer endless hours of strolling pleasure.

Barra Lodge caters for families with children and is geared towards fun and activities for the whole family.
