Day 1

On arrival in Cape Town, you will collect your hire car and

3 x nights Welgelegen Guest House in a deluxe room on a bed and breakfast basis

About Us

Nestled below the landmark Table Mountain plateau, between Tamboerskloof and Oranjezicht, lies the leafy old established area of Gardens, and in a tranquil cul-de-sac therein, you will find Welgelegen Guest House, home to many a return guest from far flung seas! Welgelegen welcomes you "home from home" and provides you with the comforts and extra luxurious touches you wish you could treat yourself to all year around. We are serious about providing you with all the attention you may need in a caring, informal and warm setting.

Welgelegen is a jewel of a Guest House, a gem set in a leafy cul-de-sac in the cosmopolitan city bowl neighbourhood of Gardens. Secluded and serene, it is only just around the corner from both Long and Kloof Street, two of Cape Town's trendiest restaurant and design destinations...Hence the name Welgelegen...the Dutch translation for "well-situated".

The Guest House comprises two Victorian houses joined by a wonderful cobbled patio with plunge pool, enclosed by terraces of iceberg roses and star jasmine. You can begin your day here breakfasting in the morning sun with Table Mountain your backdrop, or end your evening under the stars with a chilled Cape sauvignon and fairy lights flickering amongst the surrounding foliage.

All rooms are individually furnished with earthy neutral tones and splashes of both African chic and classic bohemia. The emphasis is on comfort...from the candles, the natural Rooibos bath products and the towelling dressing gowns in each bathroom, to the home-made biscuits, complimentary port and huge inviting armchairs in each room. The beds all convert to King size, and are inviting with crisp white linen, duck down duvets and soft silky cushions.  Every room has its own charm, most have balconies offering views of Table Mountain, Signal Hill or the patio below. One room has a travertine surround bath in the room complete with open fire-place, another has its own private garden and lily pond!

The attention to detail is reflected in the choice of artwork on the walls, the variety of books both old and new, the evening biscuit and olive bar, and the sumptuousness of the living room sofas. There is an overall feeling of luxury and spaciousness in the modernized dining room complete with leather chairs, enormous ornate mirror and lime mosaic fireplace in the huge beaded chandelier in the hallway and in the tall windows and high ceiling cornices of the living rooms.  The atmosphere is both intimate and charming, and the room feels like a well-worn leather boot!

Fiona, the owner, has upgraded many of the older bedrooms and bathrooms marrying the old with the new, maintaining the ambience of chic afrique and timeless classicism. The still fairly new in-house treatment room provides even further pampering for the soul with holistic and polarity based massages, aromatherapy and stress release reflexology. Alternative therapies as well as manicures, pedicures, and paraffin waxes are also catered for.

Welgelegen retains the ambience of a well-preserved and treasured home whilst simultaneously sharing its warmth and sophistication with all those who venture up its hydrangea and lavender path. This guest house offers commitment to comfort, and a personalized (and efficient) service. In the words of a recent visitor “Welgelegen is excellent value and in a different league it offers a personal vibe in a naturally blessed destination."

In addition, there is anything from 5 to 20 hippo in the lake - providing 24 hour entertainment.

The Lodge itself is on an 868 hectare property, but with traversing rights on neighbouring land of an additional 4 000 hectare - thus adding to the overall experience, and wildlife viewing in the Sabi Sand Reserve.

The landscape is rich and varied. Open savannahs, riverine thickets, river beds and lush bush vegetation ensure interesting sights around each corner, in addition the perennial Manyeleti River meanders its way through the property.

Arathusa Lodge is small, and intimate, open-plan and designed to blend with the area - both of the lake and the bush: wood and thatch, air and water – an extension of the natural environment. An infinity swimming pool overlooks the waterhole and is the perfect spot for wildlife viewing on a smouldering summer afternoon.

Breakfasts and lunches are served buffet style, while dinner is tailored to suit the guest's preference. Before the afternoon game drive, guests are presented with a menu of delectable dishes on offer for the evening ahead.

Arathusa prides itself on its leopard viewing. As leopards are territorial, their regular appearances in the area allow the guides to plot their movements and to observe their behaviour. Large herds of buffalo numbering in excess of 300 often find their way to the Arathusa Lake. One need not move far to enjoy the safari experience! Elephants are also seen in numbers. In addition, there is good general plains game in this section of the Sabi Sand Reserve, including giraffe, zebra, warthog, impala and more. This region is also excellent for birders.
