Nyala Safari Lodge in South Africa is a big 5 safari lodge, which borders the Greater Kruger Park directly. This is the perfect Big 5 Destination for Families. Their approach is to focus on all aspects of wildlife and not just chasing after the big 5, that is but a small component of the wilderness experience. The meals are typical South African cuisine with a distinctive Euro African flavour. The safari lodge accommodation comprises five thatched Rondavels (chalets) situated on the banks of the perennial Mohlabetsi River. The fully serviced en suite rooms can take up to a maximum of 15 people. In between daily activities there is also the option of relaxing by the pool. Typical daily safari activities programme starts with a light breakfast and early morning game drive safari. A combination of guided walking safari and game drives can be undertaken on request. Brunch is served in the outside lapa (thatched roof), situated on the banks of the perennial Mohlabetsi River. After a relaxing afternoon siesta the sun downer/evening game drive safari departs. The night drive will continue after the sun downer break. When dusk falls a whole new world of nocturnal species awake to roam the African bushveld savanna. Back at the lodge a typical South African three course dinner awaits. Personal safety is of the utmost importance during all our guided safari activities. The highlight for most guests who stay two nights or more is the excursion to the Olifants River where hippo, crocodiles, elephants and many other species are found. Extended stays at Nyala offer guided half or full day tours to Kruger Park, cheetah breeding centre, raptor rehabilitation centre, cultural village and many more guided excursions to enhance an extended stay of four nights and more. Other activities include optional mountain bike rides / horse rides, which are available on request. Nyala Safari Lodge now also offers Horse Trails in a nearby private game reserve in South Africa. The Horse Trails comprise one to three hour trails for the novice, intermediate and experienced rider. Take a horse ride with the majestic Drakensberg Mountains as a backdrop and you will have the opportunity to view up to three of the Big 5 amongst other species such as giraffe, hippo, zebra, eland, kudu etc making your horseback safari unforgettable. All the horses are experienced and well trained, guided by experienced horse trail guides. This Horse Trail experience is unique in that it offers short trails for all levels of rider, whether novice or advanced. The horses are South African Boerperd with good temperaments. South African Trail saddles are used and safety equipment is available. Safety equipment is compulsory for children under 18 years of age. Bottled water is supplied during the trail and included in the price. The trails start at different times pending the seasons but as a rule start at 8:30 in the morning and at 15:00 in the afternoon. Children from 9 years of age with a minimum of 20 hours riding experience and accompanied by an adult are welcome to participate. Safety equipment is compulsory. The combination of this unique Horse Trail experience in combination with our normal Big 5 game drives and specialized Big 5 walks make this a unique affordable opportunity with great flexibility. The emphasis is on quality of all aspects of the guided experience. [Alternatively you can fly to/from Phalaborwa or Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport]
