Day 3

Today will be a late check out in the afternoon. You will be met at the hotel and driven to the airport for your flight to Upington Airport. Arrive into Upington, where you will be met by a representative and escorted to your Bed and Breakfast.

La Bohème Guesthouse is a secluded retreat of exquisite relaxed living, where the Kalahari’s fascinating beauty meets with timeless elegance, refined ethnic style and exotic bohemian inspirations. Set on the banks of the Orange River, Upington is the principle centre of the Green Kalahari - malaria-free area - in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa.

The Guesthouse offers two double rooms in the residence and a spacious cottage in the garden (with two bedrooms and self-catering facilities). Colour touches as vibrant as the African sunsets add spice to the soft creamy and earthy tones echoed throughout the property. Soothing water features, relaxing music and delicate lighting emphasise the blissful and cosy atmosphere. Bath and separate shower or bath with shower or shower only, toiletries, radio-clock, heated towel rail or overhead heater. Shaver point and double basins in 2 units.

A generous breakfast (buffet) is usually served on the veranda overlooking the garden and the Valley or in the dining room nearby the cosy fire place in winter. Several additional breakfast options available (picnic basket, champagne brunch, breakfast served in room, etc.).

Spend one night at La Bohème Guesthouse on a Bed and Breakfast basis

Day 4

This morning your 4x4 vehicle will be delivered at the Guesthouse. Depart early to !Xaus Lodge in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park.

!Xaus Lodge offers a remote, tranquil wilderness experience for guests looking for total isolation, to be immersed in the environment and for an opportunity to interact with members of the resident Bushman community. It is important that guests are aware that whilst !Xaus is comfortably appointed with high standards of service, it is nevertheless “A place to experience not merely observe”. It offers a unique experience and is not just a place to stay overnight. The lodge’s remote location in the desert, its long and sometimes corrugated dune track access, its scarce and saline water, its limited power supply and the harsh climatic conditions that prevail are all part of the challenge that guests will experience first hand. KTP covers 3, 8 million hectares which is only 0.35 million smaller than the Netherlands thus sightings of game are a privilege and a source of great excitement, particularly if its lion or leopard, as they are often exclusive to those that happen to be there at that precise moment.

You have a couple of options -
Self-drive to Kamqua picnic site.

    • This can be done in any standard sedan motor vehicle.
    • Guests are met at Kamqua and escorted to the turnoff at Rooibrak to !Xaus Lodge. Guest vehicle are parked in a demarcated zone off the road behind the dunes for the duration of their stay at !Xaus Lodge.
    • Guests are then transferred to !Xaus Lodge in an Open Safari Vehicle.

Self-drive directly to !Xaus Lodge.

    • 4x4 vehicle is definitely required.
    • Guests are met by a lodge guide at Kamqua picnic site and drive in convoy to !Xaus Lodge.

The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park (KTP) treaty between South Africa and Botswana signed in 1999, unifying the Kalahari Gemsbok National Park (South Africa) and the Gemsbok National Park (Botswana) and formalising the principle of co-operative management.  South Africa’s Kalahari Gemsbok National Park was first proclaimed in 1931 and Botswana’s Gemsbok National Park in 1938. KTP is 3, 8 million hectares (38 500 km²) in extent, one of the largest National Parks in the world.

Two hundred and sixty four species of birds have been recorded of which 78 are residents, 16 seasonal migrants, 18 nomads and 152 are vagrants and irregular visitors to KTP. Two-thirds of southern Africa’s raptor species can be seen in the KTP. The antelope of the Kalahari from the shy Steenbok to the Gemsbok which is synonymous with the KTP and the massive Eland have all found ways to adapt and survive in desert conditions. Predators include the famous black-maned lion of the Kalahari, leopard, cheetah, hyena, black-backed jackal, cape fox and African wild cat amongst others. Apart from its mammals, a wide variety of reptiles and amphibians also occur in the KTP amongst which is the yellow cape cobra that can often be seen slithering in and out of the enormous sociable weaver nests. The deceptively monotonous looking Kalahari plays host to hundreds of species of flora. After 20 years of intense research, each year new flowering plants are still discovered Soft parallel-running sand dunes are covered with a patchy vegetation of grass, shrubs and trees that stabilize the dunes and offer protection against rain and wind. The Camelthorn and shepherd’s tree are a source of life in the KTP ecosystem. They provide food but very importantly they also provide shade from the harsh summer sun. The umbrella shape of the shepherd’s tree branches not only provides shade has the ability to lower the temperature of the sand below from 73°C to 21°C

Day 8

This morning after breakfast you will be transferred back to OR Tambo in time for your charter flight to Arathusa Safari Lodge in the Sabi Sand Game Reserve.

You will be transferred from the airstrip in an open safari vehicle to the lodge. Check into Arathusa Lodge where there will be time for some cool beverages and freshening up before your first afternoon/evening game drive.

The African Safari is most often measured against "The Big Five" barometer. The Big Five is a group of animals including the lion, the leopard, the rhino, the elephant and the buffalo who earned their reputations as the most dangerous animals to be hunted on foot. The phrase "Big Five" was coined by hunters of yesteryear - before the advent of the photographic safari.

The traveller seeking the Big Five safari experience will certainly find it at Arathusa. With exceptional sightings of leopard (usually the most elusive of cats), lions and rhino in the field - a camera's viewfinder is continuously filled with close contact wildlife interactions. One need not leave the comfort of the camp to see massive herds of buffalo, and elephant families which gather at the water's edge.

There is so much more to The African Safari than the Big Five. A veritable collection of smaller creatures add colour and character to a game drive.

Spend three nights at Arathusa Safari Lodge on a fully inclusive basis
